Breathing can be a great exercise for a lot of reasons. Speech Pathologists often work on breathing to help kids with pacing, fluency, organization, and calming down. While we all breathe automatically (without thinking about it), asking a child to think about their breathing isn’t as easy it sounds. Breaking down the components (inhaling and exhaling) can be challenging, especially if the child has motor planning difficulties. This Sesame Street video with Elmo uses some of the same techniques as we use: hands on stomach, take a deep breath, feel better. But it’s Elmo, and it’s a video, so it’s probably so much more entertaining for your child to watch than his Speech Pathologist!
